A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar Biography

A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar was an Indian educationist and physician. Arcot Ramaswamy Mudaliar was his twin brother. They had many achievements in common. He was born on 14th October 1887 in Kurnool.

 

He served as the Vice Chancellor of the Madras University for 27 years and became the longest serving Vice Chancellor. He also served as the Principal of Madras Medical College. He served as the Deputy Leader of the delegation of India in the First World Health Assembly that was held in Geneva in 1948. He became the Chairman of the World Health Organization and served in this position from 1949 to 1950.

 

He was made as the Vice President of the Eighth World Health Assembly in the year 1955 and served as the President of the 14th World Health Assembly. He received Padma Vibhushan Award from the Government of India for his achievements.

 

He and his brother Ramaswami got B. A. degree with Telugu as their second language from The Madras Christian College. Then they became the elected members of the Madras Legislative Council and received Knighthood from the British Government. They got honorary doctorate degree of Doctor of Civil Laws by the Oxford University.

 

When he served as the Vice Chancellor of Madras University, his brother served as the Vice Chancellor of Travancore University. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar obtained various degrees and diplomas like B. A., M. D., D. Sc., F. R. C. O. G., F. A. C. S. He wrote a textbook, Clinical Obstetrics in 1938. He died in 1974.
