A. K. Lohithadas Biography

A. K. Lohithadas was an Indian film director, screenwriter and director. He works in the Malayalam film industry. The number of films for which he has written screen plays is 35. Some of the films that he worked on include Thaniyavarthanam, Bharatham, Padheyam, Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal, Amaram, etc.


He was born on 10th May 1955 in Chalakudy in Thiru-Kochi. He was often called as Lohi. He wanted to become a writer but could not succeed in that genre. Then he shifted his attention towards Malayalam Theater and his debut script was accepted to be staged by Thoppil Bhasi. Then he started to write for Malayalam films.

 

He worked with Sibi Malayil and his first movie script was for the film Thaniavarthanam. This was a commercial success and later he combined with Sibi Malayil to produce various hit movies in Malayalam. He wrote screenplays for Sibi for the movies like Kireedam, His Highness Abdullah, Kamaladalam, Chenkol,  Dasharatham, etc.


He worked with Sathyan Anthikkad and Bharatham in the films Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal, Amaram and Sasneham. He also produced many films like Karunyam, Kanmadam, Joker, Kasthooriman, Bhoothakkannadi, etc. Many of his works are commercial success and he received Kerala State Film Award for Best Story for the film Thaniyavarthanam.


He received Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director in 1998 for the film Bhoothakannadi. He received Kerala State Film Awards six times for the films Veendum Chila Veettu Karyangal, Bhoothakannadi, Venkalam, Bharatham, Thaniyavarthanam, etc. He got Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Film Portraying Woman in Good Light for the film Kasthuri Maan. He received Film Critics award for Best Script 14 times and Film Critics Award for Best Director four times and Asianet Film Best Script Writer Award in 1999.

 

He married Sindhu and has two sons, Vijayshankar and Harishankar. He died of cardiac arrest on 29th June 2009 in Kochi in Kerala.
