A. Bhimsingh Biography

A. Bhimsingh was a famous film director who made commercial hits in Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi languages. He started his career in the early 1950’s with Tamil movies and later did Telugu and blockbuster Hindi movies. Many of his Hindi movies were the remakes of his own south Indian hits. With Dileep Kumar, he made classic hits like Aadmi and Gopi. He received Filmfare Award nomination for Best Director for the movie, Meharbaan. He is also known for making a long series of Tamil movies with actor Sivaji Ganesan, with all of which started with the Tamil syllable ’pa’. Among the ‘pa’ series movies, Pava Mannippu earned him national award for best regional film in Tamil language. Paalum Pazhamum, Pasamalar, Pazhani, Paarthaal Pasi Theerum and Padithaal Mattum Podhuma are the popular among the series. The music of majority of these movies was given by popular Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy duo.

 

He was born in Thirupathi in the year 1924. He married twice. He first married Sona first with whom he had 8 children. B. Lenin - award winning film editor and director and cinematographer B. Kannan who has been mostly associated with numerous Bharathiraja hits are among those 8 children. He later married famous character artist of south Indian cinema, Sukumari in 1959. The couple had one son, Dr. Suresh Bhimsingh. He passed away in 1978.

 

He started his career as an assistant editor during late 1940’s and worked under film makers - Krishnan-Panju. Then he became assistant director and with 1950’s, he made his directorial venture. He has given numerous hits to Sivaji Ganeshan as well as other stars of Tamil. Apart from it, he directed memorable movies of Bollywood like Aai Phirse Bahar, Pooja Ke Phool, Joroo Ka Ghulam, Sadhu Aur Shaitaan, Loafer, Maalik, Main Chup Rahungi, Amaanat, Gopi, Gauri, Khandan, Aadmi and Yaaron Ka Yaar. His 1975 Tamil movie, Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal earned National award for best actress for Lakshmi.
