A. Ayyappan Biography

A. Ayyappan was a popular poet of contemporary times of Malayalam. Ayyappan is known for his unique writing style and his poems are immensely popular and have also received critics’ appreciation. Yet from childhood till death, he had a struggled death. He was addicted to heavy drinking and was found dead at one of the streets of the heart of the capital city and his body was kept unidentified in the mortuary for hours. This great poet was identified only after 12 hours. That was the tragic end of one of the most popular poets of Malayalam in the present era. He won the Asan Puraskaram - one of the highest literary awards in Malayalam literature, for the year 2010. He was on the way to Chennai to receive this award when he met with tragic death. With his death, it marked the end of last remaining icon of anarchism in Kerala. He was an active member of Communist party in Kerala. He has also received Kerala Sahithya Akademi Award in 1999.

Ayyappan Achari, popularly known as Ayyappan started writing at a younger age. He was an active member of Communist party during his college days. He has worked for Janayugam, the party newspaper. He lost his father at a younger age and mother at the age of 15. He was unmarried and lived with his sister’s family in Nemon, Thiruvananthapuram city. He led a bohemian lifestyle and most known for songs very near to human life. Many poems and wordings of Ayyappan have become immensely popular and made him a social icon of present times.

His best works include - Chitharogaaspatryile Dinangal, Kalkkariyude Niramullavar, Malamillaatha Pambu, Mulamthandinu Rajayakshmaavu, Ente shavapetti chumakunnavarodu, Greeshmavum Kanneerum, Yangjam, Veyil Thinnunna Pakshi, Greeshmame sakhee, Sumangali, Tettiyodunna SeconduSoochi, Karuppu and Budhanum Aattinkuttiyum. Ayyappan was amazingly rigorous in his poetic expression.
