Virat Kohli - The Modern Age Anchor For Indian Cricket

Virat Kohli was born on 5th November 1988 in New Delhi. He was raised in Uttam Nagar. He finished his studies till the intermediate level. He was coached at the West Delhi Cricket Academy. He has played for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy. During one of the matches against Karnataka, he lost his father, Prem Kohli who died of a stroke while he was playing in the match. He made ninety that day and after finishing the batting, he went home for the funeral rites. The Captain for Delhi, Mithun Manhas, was stunned by his contribution under such circumstances.

Virat Kohli is a right handed bat and a right arm medium pace bowler. He is also a great fielder. He is one of the most talented and promising batsmen that has come to the Indian team in the recent times. He led the Under 19 Side to the World Championship in 2008 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His efforts as a batsman were appreciated when he averaged 47 during that tournament and as a captain; his tactical moves were commended when he made some crucial bowling changes that worked in the team’s favour. He made a century in that tournament against the West Indies.

Virat Kohli had a very good Ranji Trophy season in 2006. He made his test debut against the West Indies at Kingston, Jamaica just last month on 20th June 2011. He made his one day international debut against Sri Lanka at Dambulla on 18th August 2008. He made his T20 International debut against Zimbabwe at Harare on 12th June 2010. He has played so far three tests, scoring 76 runs and taking five catches. He has played 59 one day internationals, scoring 2,153 runs with 5 centuries and 15 fifties and a highest score of 118. He has taken 27 catches. He has played 4 T20 Internationals, scoring 68 runs and has taken three catches. He has played 122 first class matches, scoring 5,640 runs with 16 centuries and 29 fifties. He has taken 74 catches and 3 wickets.

Virat Kohli became the first Indian to score a century on his World Cup debut against Bangladesh earlier this year when he made 100 not out. His 83 run partnership with Gautam Gambhir was important for India’s recovery after a dismal start during their run chase in the World Cup final this year against Sri Lanka.

He is yet to make his mark in the tests. In his debut series against the West Indies, he was all at sea against the sharp pace generated by Fidel Edwards.

Virat Kohli has very strong arms that can hit the ball hard. He has impressed everyone with his batting technique and his fielding potential will keep the selectors interested in him. Last year, he became the fastest Indian to score a thousand runs in one day internationals and averaged over fifty. He is an attacking player and settles down fast to steady the batting with a cool head. At twenty two years of age, he has already portrayed himself as a mature cricketer. He is very confident with his footwork and his shot selection. He is the third player behind Sachin Tendulkar and Suresh Raina to score two centuries in one day internationals before turning twenty two years of age.

Virat Kohli considers Herschelle Gibbs as his cricket idol. The other sports personalities that he is very much impressed with are Roger Federer and Leander Paes. Virat Kohli likes Aston Martin cars and Ed Hardy shirts. He has a golden dragon tattooed on his forearm. He is well on his way to carve a place for himself as the modern age anchor for Indian cricket.
