Shiny Wilson - Retired Indian Athlete

Padma Shri Shiny Wilson a retired National athlete was born on 8th May 1965 in a village called Thodupuzha in Idukki District of State Kerala. The best women athlete in SAF games held in Chennai during 1995, Shiny developed great interest in athletics when she was too young. She got tremendous support from her parents to full fill her ambition. She worked very hard; her determination and awesome support from her parents ensured her to reach highest level of the game. The best part of Shiny is being honest and she never hesitates to admit her mistake. Also she never bothers about others commenting on her performance and just kept practicing to move ahead.

 

While young she joined the Kottayam sports division, which helped her to develop her skills. He got tips from the legend athlete P.T. Usha as they studied at same sports authorities / clubs. In 800 metres category, Shiny was National Champion for 14 years, which is one of the landmark achievements of her. P.J. Devesala coached her along with her Usha. In International encounters she has represented our country more than 75 times. She has taken part in six Asian Track and field meets starting from Jakarta in 1985 and in fact she is the only athlete to do so. During these six years she has bagged 14 medals (7 Gold, 5 Silver, 2 Bronze). In 7th SAF appearance she won 20 medals of which 18 were Gold medals and remaining Silver.

 

The worst day in her life was the day when she was disqualified in 1996 Asian Games held at Seoul since she cut the inner lane. But the most memorable day was during 1989 Asian Track and Field Meet in Delhi where she won the Gold medal in spite she came second. Gold Medallist Sun Sumei was tested positive in dope test, which gave way for Shiny to get the Gold Medal. Since 1984 she participated in four Olympic games. Even though she has not won any medals, but along with PT Usha she lifted India’s hope in 4*400 women relay event.

 

She becomes the first women to hold the flag for our country in 1992 Olympics held at Barcelona. She has won several awards in her career. She was awarded the Arjuan award in the year 1985, in 1996 she got Birla Award and Padma Shri in 1998. In 1991 she received Chinese Journalist award for being in top 10 Asian athlete list.
