Satyan - The Actor Who Redefined Malayalam Movies

Satyanesan Nadar who is known as Satyan on stage is the most gifted actor of 60’s and 70’s – the golden era of Malayalam movies. When he entered the industry, the mlayalam movies were dipped in overacting and glycerin tears of heroines. He gave new definitions to Malayalam cinema where all emotions were hidden inside. That’s the reason why almost all leading stars of Mollywood at present see him as an institution or role model.

He was born in a Christian family of Travancore on November 9, 1912. Most recently we have celebrated his 100th birth anniversary.  He completed his studies and worked both as a teacher and clerk before he joined army in 1941. He worked under British in North eastern states during Second World War. Then he returned back to Kerala and joined as inspector in Alappuzha. But destination was something else. He was interested in drama from school days and a desire had grown in his heart, to see himself as an actor on silver screen.

He received many promises. A film titled ‘Sneha seema’ was produced by Balakrishnan in 1951. For some reasons the movie was shelved. So, his first released movie was Athmasakhi in 1952. So, the first movie of this great actor was released when he was 40! Perhaps, it’s not possible in present cinema, where an actor debut as a hero in his early 40’s. Then came historic Neelakuyil in 1954; a milestone movie in the history of Malayalam film industry. After that, till his death he didn’t look back. From one success to another, through his troubles and illness, he ruled Malayalam industry as the top hero for 20 years.

When best actor award was introduced by state government, he was the first actor to receive this award for the movie Kadalpalam in 1969. Once again he won the same award for his memorable performances in Karakana kadal and Sarasayya. The second and last one was given posthumous in 1971. So, in the three years, he won twice. If he had not left the world that time, he would have won almost all awards in 70’s.

Towards the end of his life, we have seen him as the finest actor of Malayalam. Anubhavangal Paalichakal and Vaalvemayam are among those critically acclaimed movies. He has shared a memorable part in the best ever movie of Malayalam too – Chemmeen. Life was taken away in the form of blood cancer, though he tried the best to hide it even from his dear ones. He left the world with many tasks incomplete, a loss for all his fans. It’s my humble tribute to the finest actor of Malayalam, Kerala has ever produced!
