Sai Baba of Shirdi, Sathya Sai Baba was born eight years after the death of Shirdi Sai Baba. Sathya Sai Baba is said to be the incarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba. He built a temple for his followers in 1994 and he became very famous for his alleged miracles. Thousands of devotees visited his ashram every year. He had devotees not only in India but also in foreign countries.

Extraordinary Powers of Sai Baba

When he was a small child, he was very intelligent and charitable in nature. He was exceptional in studies and had great interest in spiritual aspects of life. Once when he was stung by a scorpion went unconscious. When he regained his consciousness, there were many changes in his behavior. He started to speak and sing in Sankrit, a language which he did not know earlier.

In the year 1940, he materialized Prasad and flowers. Everyone of his family thought that he was bewitched. But he claimed that he was the Sai Baba – the reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi.

He got four severe heart attacks in 1963 and it is believed by his devotees that he healed himself. He said that he would come into this world again as Prema Sai Baba after his death. When four intruders went into the bedroom of Sai Baba in 1993 to kill him, he escaped unharmed and this is also attributed to his extraordinary power.

He did many miracles including changing a pebble into sugar candy and water into gasoline. A foreigner wrote a book on him named Sai Baba – The Man of Miracles.

Philanthropic Works of Sathya Sai Baba

He had strong belief in humanity and carried out various charitable works through his charitable trust. He had founded schools, hospitals and many other charitable institutions. He started a project to provide drinking water to 1.2 million people of Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh in 1995.

He established many ashrams and mandirs. He started the Sri Sathya Sai Baba University with three branches at Puttaparthi, Bangalore and Anantapur. He also established Muddenahalli Sathya Sai Loka Seva School and Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Trust Educational Institutions. Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences was started in Puttaparthi with 220 bed facility hospital is open to all free of cost. Apart from these, many general hospitals, two specialty hospitals and eye and dental clinics were started by him. The total value of the schools and colleges that he founded in India and abroad is 40,000 crore rupees or 9 billion US dollars.

Controversies faced by Sathya Sai Baba

- He spoke against the use of internet by people. He said that people focus on ‘inner net’ rather than on internet and so its usage must be stopped. Many people including his devotees opposed his view.

- He was accused to have sexual relationship with his followers. But later one of the trustee of Sai Organization made it clear to the public that Sai Baba had never met any devotees alone.

- He predicted that he will live up to the age of 94 but he died at the age of 84. When he died in 2011 many controversies rose on this matter and some people said that he might have referred to the lunar year.

His Last Days

He needed a wheel chair since 2004. His health started to deteriorate and so he made only very less public appearances. He died on 24^th April 2011. More than half a million people gathered at his place to attend his funeral procession.

His Messages

"I have come to light the lamp of Love in your hearts, to see that it shines day by day with added luster. I have not come on behalf of any exclusive religion.”

“My objective is the establishment of Sanatana Dharma, which believes in one God as propitiated by the founders of all religions. So, none has to give up his religion or deity."

These words say that though he was a spiritual saint he was not a religious saint.
