Rajesh Khanna - The First Superstar Of Indian Cinema

Rajesh Khanna is perhaps the luckiest actor of India, who had huge female fans around. It was a time when long queues of directors were seen in front of his bungalow ‘Ashirwaad’ and huge crowd waiting below his balcony to get a glance of their superstar. Girl fans always attacked him and a few even tried to suicide, when he married Dimple Kapadia. Who is this Rajesh Khanna? What’s so special in him that millions followed and imitated him? What was his magical talent that pulled crowds to theatres just to watch him? Was he so handsome? Yes, of course he was! Through this column let me briefly explain the career of Rajesh Khanna.

Rajesh Khanna debuted with Aakri Khat in 1966. He was the winner of talent hunt show organized by United producers and Filmfare which showed him the way to Bollywood. Next year two movies were released – Raaz and baharom ke sapne. Both were loved by fans for his acting skills as well as wonderful music. But in 1969, when Aradhana was released, it witnessed the great change ever happened in the life of an Indian actor. The platinum jubilee hit Aradhana, opposite Sharmila Tagore was a trend setter that gave two stars to Indian cinema – Rajesh Khanna and Kishore Kumar. When Rajesh Khanna became the new super star of Indian cinema, history witnessed the down fall of many romantic heroes of 1960’s. Rajendra Kumar, Shammi Kapoor and Joy Mukherjee were among the leading group. It witnessed the downfall of Mohd.Rafi too, thus beginning the new era of movies and music and trend was visible from early 70’s.

Rajesh Khanna produced 15 consecutive solo hits during the period of late 60’s and early 70’s – an unbroken record till now.  He was at the top till Big B emerged as the new star during middle 70’s. He was one among those stars of sky whose rise and fall were so quick, but left marks forever. He was successfully paired with Sharmila Tagore and Mumtaz most and his golden jubilee hits include Aaradhana, katti patang, Anand, Do Raaste, Namak Haram, Khamoshi, Mere jeevan saathi, Roti, Sacha Jhoota and The train. Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Shanthi Samantha were those directors, for whom Rajesh Khanna delivered maximum block busters.
