Pune International Airport

Pune Airport is situated around 10 km to the north-east of Pune, Maharashtra, India. The airport is controlled by the Airport Authority of India and the runway is shared by the Lohegaon Air Base. The airport in Pune achieved the status of international airport when the trips to Singapore and Dubai were originated by an Indian (Airline). However, later, these trips were cancelled. At present, there are two trips to international destinations, one is Frankfurt by PrivatAir and the other one is Dubai by Air India Express.

Outline

Since airport in Pune is a base Air Force controlled by the Indian Air Force, sometimes there are frictions between the IAF and the Airports Authority of India over arrangement of flights and landing of jets at night.

Tender for latest Pune International Airport

Latest blueprint of Pune Airport for the metropolitan region of Pune is in process and state government has delegated the responsibility to Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) for the execution of Pune International Airport assignment. The area which is under construction for this project, at present, is the center crossing area of Rajgurunagar and Chakan situated besides the Pune-Nashik highway. The latest Pune International Airport will work as an entry to the city and to western Maharashtra. Moreover, floricultural and agricultural exports will get faster accessibility to their foreign market after this project is completed.

The airport will cover the area of 6338 acres, being India’s largest airport after its completion.  After the new airport is constructed, Pune will be connected to more internationals destinations than it is today. Maharashtra Airport Development Company is currently considering the tender from consultants to carry out the techno-economic studies, support in achieving the needed statutory consents and offer management services in the project.

Renovation

Additional terminals are being constructed by the AAI, as the present terminal can manage only 550 people at one time. After the construction, the new terminals will be able to manage more than 1200 people at one time. The latest terminal will be made as per the international standards. The runway is also being renovated and its length would be augmented to 3250 metres, 650 metres more than the current length. After the entire renovation work is completed, the airport can supervise larger planes than it can at present. ‘Instrument Landing System’ is also being considered which will be start functioning soon and will help smooth landings and takeoffs even in bad weather conditions.

Destinations

Destinations within the country will include all chief metros. Domestic operators are preparing to initiate trips to Aurangabad. International destinations, at present, include Frankfurt using a Boeing BBJ2, managed by PrivatAir and Dubai by Air India. These flights underwent a recent change from all high and middle class and now flying though this route in economy class is also possible for passengers.

Transport

Services of pre-paid taxis and pre-paid auto rickshaws from airport are available. Coach services and private car on rent services to many important locations in Pune are available as well. Proposal for metro rail is also considered which will provide a transport link to the Pune airport.
