Personal Life Of Jawaharlal Nehru

It is a well know fact that the politician and social reformer Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister of India after its independence and remained in this position till his death. Though all the goodness that he did for the society is known to the people, there are some least known details in his personal life. He was born to Motilal Nehru, a Kashmiri Brahmin. Jawahar is an Arabic name meaning pearl and Lal means red in Urdu. He was very dear to his father as he was his only son till his age of 11. Only after that the daughters, Vijayalakshmi and Krishna were born to Motilal Nehru.

Jawaharlal Nehru led a luxurious life in his childhood days. He had a well furnished luxurious home which has a stable and two swimming pools. He was tutored at home privately by the English and Scottish teachers and so he was well versed with the English language. He had a flair for the English lifestyle which he expressed only during his days at Cambridge. He said that he felt more like an Englishman than an Indian as his likes and dislikes were based on that.

Jawaharlal Nehru was sent to London to pursue his higher education and completed his studies in law. When he stayed in London he was exposed to cosmopolitan culture and his ideas changed greatly. The ideas of socialism had a magic bearing on him and he was lured by the Fabian ideals. After his return to India, he joined his father in practicing law. He had active involvement in the theosophical society of Annie and Besant and thereby with the Home Rule League. But his profession did not allow him to devote time to such activities.

Kamala Kaul of an orthodox Kashmir Brahmin family entered his life as wife in 1916. His only daughter was Indira Gandhi who became the Indian prime minister later and was the biggest power in India during her times. After the incident at Jalian Walla Bagh in 1919, he took an interest in politics. The ideas of Mahatma Gandhi influenced him. But he was opposed the views of Gandhi in many aspects. Gandhi was oriented towards the tradition and culture of India while Nehru liked that of the western world. But the sad plight of the Indian peasants and the poverty of the village people moved him and he became more concerned about enhancing their lives and so he changed his views. It is said that he even tried vegetarianism for a brief time.

He saw his first arrest in 1921 and in that year he had to witness many arrests and had to spend most of his time in prison. At that time, his political philosophy saw a good change and he learned how to be patient in times of need. He adapted some of the Gandhian ways of life so that he could achieve things that he wished. When he happened to travel to Europe in 1926 due to the necessity of taking his ailing wife for treatment, he met many communists and socialists there. They inculcated the sense of patriotism in him and the need for achieving the Indian independence. His views against imperialism strengthened after that.

As he lost his wife at a young age and remained a widower till the end, it was said that he had affairs with Edwina Mountbatten, the wife of the last viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten. Her company brought him peace of mind and both were happy with each other. However their relationship was more spiritual than physical. He wrote many letters to her which she treasured throughout her lifetime. Their relationship was confirmed by Pamela Mountbatten, her daughter. Apart from these personal things, he was keen in bringing about a change in the society. There is no doubt that he led India in productive lines and his death in 1964 was a great loss to India and its people. Even today, Jawaharlal Nehru photos and Jawaharlal Nehru videos were great inspiration for young politicians.
