Tiruchendur is located at the south tip of India, in Tuticorin district in the state of Tamilnadu.Its also as Thirucheer Alaiwai, Tiruchendur is a popular pilgrimage destination situated in the Gulf of Mannar.

Tiruchendur was earlier known by the name Kapadapuram. It was later changed to Tiruchen-Chendiloor which in course of time became Tiruchendur. The town witnessed the rule of many dynasties like the Cheras, Pandyas, etc.  In the year 1649, Tiruchendur was attacked by the Dutch, in their attempt to capture Toothukudi from the Portuguese.

Tiruchendur town, located about 45 km from Tuticorin, is surrounded by Theri forests or arid forests. The red colored soil of Tiruchendur dry land forests is believed to be due to a bloodshed caused by the execution of a thief, as per the ordinance of Karkkuuvel Ayyanar, a local god. These dry land forests are also noted for its rich vegetation of tropical plants and palm trees and cashew plantations.

Tiruchendur is easily accessible as it is well connected by road. The nearest airport to Tiruchendur is Tuticorin Airport, which is about 40 km away. Tiruchendur is connected with Tirunelveli Junction 60 km by rail, which in turn is connected with major towns and cities of India. The best time to visit Tiruchendur is from October to March.

As per ancient texts, Tiruchendur was a famous pilgrimage site that goes back to the pre- Christian era. It is believed that Lord Murugan killed the demon Surapadman at this place. This town is considered to be one of the six holy abodes or ‘Aarupadai Veedu’ of Lord Murugan, the others being Thiruparamkundram, Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruthani and Pazhamudhircholai.

Senthil Aandavar, with the Valli and Deivayanai temple, is popular here. The temple is managed by the government of Tamil Nadu. Some 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from Tiruchendur is the town of Arumuganeri, the location of the Darangadara Chemical Works.

Tiruchendur means sacred and prosperous town of victory. It’s the second sacred abode of Lord Murugan.  Tiruchendur Murugan Kovil of Tiruchendur is also the only shrine of Lord Murugan which is located on seashore, the others being situated on hill tops or forests.

Community participation is high for the 12-day Masi Thiruvizha festival at Tiruchendur. The Kayamozhi Athitha Nadarhal Arakattalai Mandahapadi committee organizes functions on the sixth and seventh days of the festival.

Taxi services are available from Madurai and Trivandrum to Tiruchendur. Bus services connect Tiruchendur with Chennai, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Trivandrum and Kanyakumari. Tamil Nadu Road Transport buses are frequently available at Tiruchendur. We have lots of hotels and restaurants around the city for tourist. Tiruchendur not even famous for temple, it’s also for education.

This holy town still preserves the traditional rituals and customs. Notwithstanding this fact, there modern developments have made inroads in to the heart of the city through shopping malls, restaurants, hotels and many high sky architectural structures.
