Mohammad Shami has announced his arrival on the international scene and how. After showing what he can do with the new ball against Australia in the recently concluded bilateral series, he continued his good showing against the West Indies as well. In the entire match, he took nine wickets. He played a crucial part in both innings.

His figures in both innings read really impressive. He was equally impressive, or in fact more as he took five West Indies wickets to wrap up the match on the third day itself (which was one of the reasons why Sachin Tendulkar’s proposed petal shower got ruined!?).

But if you were to ask the young fast bowler if he had any particular plan against the West Indies batsman to tackle them, there comes a very candid “no”. So what was the success behind the debutant getting almost half the team out and was nowhere less than the other performers like Rohit Sharma (who was also playing his first Test match) or R Ashwin.

The fact of the matter is that Shami showed a lot of character and looked more mature than his age. But if there is any ‘secret’ to talk of, it is sticking to the basics. Bowling to the limits and to ones strengths is what Shami did. However one has to mention that the reverse swing that he was getting added to the troubles to the batsmen.

The line and the length that Shami mentioned all through was another secret of his success. He bowled at such places that it was impossible for the batsmen to play the ball when it was reverse swinging. That is why the stumps were flying around every now and then.

This performance has made him a strong candidate for the forthcoming series against South Africa when India travels there. If he can be so destructive on Indian pitches, it will be good to only leave to the imagination what rampage Shami can do on the African pitches there.

There are certainly a lot of expectations on the young shoulders so early. There is no doubt that Mohammad Shami has given a ray of hope to a livelier Indian bowling of late.
