Mahendra Singh Dhoni - The Greatest Wicket Keeper Captain Of India

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born on 7th July 1981 in Ranchi, Bihar which is now in Jharkhand State. He was born in a Rajput family to Mr. Pan Singh and Mrs. Devaki Devi. His village is Lvali in the Almora District of Uttarakhand. His parents moved from Uttarakhand to Ranchi as his father got a job in the Mecon Industries Limited.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni studied at DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir at Shyamali in Ranchi. He initially showed interest in football and badminton. He was a goalkeeper when he played football. His football coach referred him to play for a local cricket club. Dhoni impressed them with his wicket keeping skills and he started focusing on cricket after his high school. From his childhood days, he has been an ardent fan of Sachin Tendulkar and Adam Gilchrist.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was picked up for the 1998 Vinoo Mankad Trophy for Under-16 Championship and he did well. He is a right hand batsman, a right arm medium pace bowler and a wicket keeper. He is popularly known as `Mahi’. He represented India –A on their Kenya tour in 2004. He made his one day debut later that year when he played his first match against Bangladesh on 23rd December 2004 at Chittagong. He made his test debut against Sri Lanka on 2nd December 2005 at Chennai.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni plays mostly from the back foot with a heavy bottom hand grip. He has a very fast hand speed when he meets the ball. His trademark shot is known as the `helicopter’ shot.  He has played 56 tests so far scoring 2,948 runs with a highest of 148. He has four centuries and twenty fifties. He has played 186 one day matches scoring 6,049 runs with a highest of 183 not out. He has seven centuries and thirty eight fifties. He has played 26 T 20 internationals and has scored 451 runs with a highest of 46. He has played 249 first class matches scoring 13,161 runs with 20 centuries and 83 fifties. He has also bowled in one day matches and has picked up a wicket like Syed Kirmani. He has 173 dismissals behind the wickets in tests, 240 dismissals in one day matches and 632 dismissals in first class matches.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni scored 148 against Pakistan in his fifth match in 2005 which was then the highest score by an Indian wicket keeper. Later in the year, he scored 183 not out against Sri Lanka and broke his own record. At the end of the 2006 season, he was ranked as the No.1 player in the ICC one day rankings.  He had a dismal 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. He was made Captain of the T 20 World Cup in September 2007 and he led India to the championship in the initial tournament. He was made Captain of the Test and One Day side in November 2008 and he has not looked back since then. He has led by example in all forms of the game and under his leadership; India has been able to reach the top spot in the ICC Test Team rankings. Recently, he has led from the front to win the World Cup Championship in One Day Internationals, bringing the Cup to India after twenty eight long years.

I hail him as the best wicket keeper batsman in the history of cricket after Adam Gilchrist and he is undoubtedly the greatest wicket keeper batsman and captain for India.
