Leh is situated 3505 meters above the mean sea level that it is rightly called as the roof of the world. It is situated in Ladakh region near Kargil having an area of 45,110 square meters boasting to be the largest district in India. The Kashmir occupied by Pakistan lies to its west and China borders the north and east and Himachal Pradesh lies to its South East. The Leh town and 113 villages make this district. There are 1, 17,232 people living in this place.

 

The climate of Leh is one of the attracting factors. It is one of the very few places in India that is covered by snow and the temperature ranges from minus 28 degree Celsius in winter to 33 degree Celsius in summer. Leh comprises of the modern town as well as the old city where you can find the houses built of mud and timber. The Indian army is stationed at this place to watch the borders of China and Pakistan. The main work of the army is to repair the roads and make them navigable during winter season.

 

You can find number of travel agencies, pizza huts and souvenir shops in Leh making it a perfect tourist location. Two roads NH 1D and Leh Manali highway connects Leh with other parts of India. Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport is the highest airport in India. Leh has no rail routes.

 

Some of the places of interest in Leh are sculpture at Drass, Lamayuru monastery, Phyang monastery, Hemis monastery, Alchi monastery, Likir monastery, Rock Cut Sculpture at Mulbekh, Old Castle Tsemo Hill, Leh Palace, Stupa at T – Suru and Shey Palace. Pangong Lake is situated at an altitude of 14,000 feet and Tsomo Riri Lake is situated at an elevation of 15,000 feet above sea level.

 

The Tibetan wild ass and snow leopard are found in the Changthang region of Leh. The rare birds like bar headed goose, great crested grebe and brahme ducks are also found here. Bird watching is one of the pass times of the tourists. Other attractions here are trekking, camping, water sports, mountaineering, etc. Gurgur tea in this region is very famous and delicious.

 

The Leh Palace, Leh Mosque and beautiful valleys attract many people from all over the world. The Leh palace was built in 17th century. It has nine storeys and is now in a ruined state. King Tashi Namgyal built the Namgyal Tsemo Gompa in 1430 and this has a big idol of Buddha made of solid gold. Leh is a good place to visit that is still having its pure air and serene atmosphere.
