IPL- Review Of Season 2

The second season of IPL was known as IPL 2, was hosted by South Africa and was played between 18 April and 24 May 2009. IPL 2 was the second biggest cricket tournament in the world, after the Cricket World cup and was forecast to have an estimated television audience of more than 200 million people in India alone. Since IPL 2 interfered with the multi-phase Indian general elections, the Government of India refused to commit extra security for the tournament so it had to be shifted to South Africa.  Though India did not host the second season, the format of the tournament remained unchanged from the 2008 season format.  Relocating the tournament posed extreme logistical challenges for the BCCI since more than 10,000 cricketers and other staff members needed to be flown from India to South Africa within a span of a few weeks. The IPL injected approximately US$100 million into South Africa's local economy.  In addition, the BCCI signed a Rs. 8,200 Crores (US$1.63 billion) contract with Multi Screen Media to broadcast matches live from South Africa to India.

In this edition some of the rules were modified like the number of international players in a squad was increased from 8 to 10 and the players’ purchase cap was increased from 5 million dollars to 7 million dollars. The other rules and the format was exactly the same as the previous edition.

Delhi Daredevils (DDR) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were the top 2 teams in the group stage with 20 and 17 points respectively. The very first match was played on 18th of April between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings which the Mumbai Indians won by 18 runs. Sachin Tendulkar was named the man of the match for his unbeaten knock of 59. In the second match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Rajasthan royals the royals succumbed to the lowest total in the season i.e. 58 all out and the lost the match due to their extremely poor performance. This edition began with a few low scoring matches but soon caught on to the blasting nature of the previous edition with a few high scoring matches like the one between DDR and CSK on 23rd of April. The very same day Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) played an interesting match where both the teams’ scores were leveled at 150 but RR came on top in the super over.

A few very close and interesting matches ensued and in one of them RR posted the highest total of this edition which was 211 against KXIP who failed to chase it down. After the group stage the semifinals round began on 22 may with DDR losing to Deccan Chargers by 6 wickets with the Aussie veteran Adam Gilchrist being named the player of the match for his astounding knock of 85 runs. The second semifinal was between CSK and RCB where RCB managed to chase down a modest total of 146 runs posted by CSK. The finals between RCB and Deccan Chargers went right down to the wire with the Deccan Charges winning by 6 runs thanks to a well-crafted knock of 53 runs by Herschelle Gibbs and RCB ended up being the runners up. Mathew Hayden was the highest scoring batsman with 572 runs from 12 matches and R.P. Singh who had 23 scalps to his name was the bowler with the most wickets. Adam Gilchrist was named the Player of the tournament.

The total attendance to the tournament was counted to be roughly around 1.4 million. The event wasn’t expected to be that successful but by the end of the tournament it received a mighty response and was hailed as an extraordinary accomplishment. It set record viewership and was praised for globalizing cricket.
