I Can't Even Imagine Cricket Without Sachin

Today when I opened newspaper and read front page, a column caught my attention first. Yesterday evening I heard in news too. The day that many of cricket fans including me have feared a lot has just arrived. Yes, God of cricket is disappearing from crease. My heart sank and I didn’t even go through other pages, Sachin’s journey, his life history, career records or anything else. Truth is that, though many fans including me has accepted the fact that, the short man who taught us to love cricket and sit before television screen for hours or a day will be declared ‘Out’ by ‘Time’ umpire today or tomorrow. Yet the whole day, including this moment while I prepare this column I have not recovered yet. Then how can I read those pages that ponder the records of setting sun? I just read a column title from front page, not even its content – Only 10 days left for Tendulkar. Yes only 10 days for the man who play in ‘10’ number shirt.

Just one question flashed through my mind today morning; may be because I am a bit greedy – He could have stayed here one year more, to complete 25 years! I am sure every one of you might have thought the same way I did. It’s only because we just want to him playing for India at least for a short time from now on – to stop the sunset for at least a few moments! Since the last world cup, Sachin’s retirement has been the hot topic of discussion. As a diehard fan of Sachin, I too have felt depressed several times thinking about his retirement. But a few months or one year ago, I happened to read a column written by a journalist in a Malayalam newspaper. Though I read the whole column, its last paragraph touched my soul a lot. The words were, “Sachin, it is better that you retire now. It’s not because we love you less. It’s only because we love you more…. beyond extremes!” Suddenly I felt as if my thoughts and distressing puzzles have been answered. Yes, like every Sachin fan, I too can’t tolerate people and critics blame my hero. As told in an old proverb, it’s better to see you retire in good fame than hearing bad words about you. That’s exactly the same day when I made my mind to accept the retirement of Indian legend. Yes, we all love you a lot!

I still remember the time when I started loving cricket. It was when Sachin has just entered Indian Cricket and he was only 18 then. During 1991-1992 period he was one of the most promising cricketers from Indian team. Yet I never even imagined that he will stay here in form for more than 2 decades entertaining we all and our kids – almost impossible for a sports person. He made me watching cricket patiently for one day. If he is batting on crease, ODI or test, I never leave television. That was what we called Sachin magic. It was during late 90’s when “6+4 = 10 Dulkar” equation, created by a Sachin fan ruled Indian television cricket telecasts a lot.

With the retirement of Sachin, a period of Indian cricket is to retire. Like Srinath-Prasad-Kumble trio of bowling, we too had a magic trio in batting. Yes, the trio of same age – Sachin-Ganguly-Dravid. With the retirement of Sachin, the last evening of another mesmerizing journey is coming to an end like a sweet dream. Is it a dream or reality? I don’t know. Just I can’t imagine how Indian cricket will be after Sachin. Let me end this column wishing all the very best for the most noble person of international cricket whom I really wish to see once. Let me repeat once again what the journalist has told in that column, “It is better that you retire now. It’s not because we love you less. It’s only because we love you more…. “
