There is an interesting story how Bangalore got its name. The Hoysala king Veera Ballala was ruling over this place in 1120 AD. He went into a forest for hunting and eventually lost his way. After a long time, he met an old lady. She took pity on the tired king and gave him shelter at night and some boiled beans to eat. The king was full of gratitude for this old lady and so he named the place as Benda Kal Ooru. This means the town of boiled beans.

The town went into the hands of Chola kings in 1024 C.E. Prior to this the place remained a part of the Ganga Kingdom and was ruled over by the ruler, Gangavadi. Hoysala King captured this place in 1117 C.E. During the period of Kempe Gowda, the place saw various constructions and fortifications. The four watch towers still standing bears testimony to the constructions of 16^th century. They are

Restoration of Wodeyar Rule

Wodeyars sought the help of British. British saw that Tipu was against their rule and if Wodeyars came into power again, they will serve as the puppet kings in their hands. So they waged war against Tipu Sultan. These wars were called as Anglo-Carnatic Wars. Tipu withstood the first three Anglo-Carnatic wars however was killed in the fourth Anglo-Carnatic War. After his defeat, British restored the kingdom to Wodeyars and they became the rulers of Bangalore.
