Gautam Gambhir was fined 15 per cent of his match fees during Kolkata’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. This is the second incident in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), which has brought along bad memories. The previous incident was a spat between Kieron Pollard of Mumbai Indians and Mitchell Starc of Bangalore.

As far as Gambhir’s incident is concerned, he showed dissent at the umpire’s decision. The southpaw was given caught behind off the bowling of Dale Steyn. This certainly did not go well with Gambhir, who protested the decision right there. And by the way, Gambhir does not hide his emotions when it comes to on-field cricket.

Gambhir tried to chase a wide delivery and to his luck did not hit the bat. However, the Hyderabad players made an instant appeal for caught behind. And to the shock of Gambhir, the umpire, Nigel Llong gave him out. This was too much for Gambhir to digest as he showed his displeasure immediately.

However, Gambhir did accept to the offense categorized under level 1 (Article 2.1.3). The dashing batsman also did not have any problems for his fine as 15 per cent of match fee as well. The fine was imposed by Ranjan Madugalle, who was the match referee in that match, played on May 18.

When this incident took place, Kolkata Knight Riders were eight without loss before Gambhir was given out. They had to chase a score of 140+ to beat Hyderabad and make a statement to make it to the playoffs in an aggressive manner.

The contribution came from Manish Pandey, who scored 35 runs in that match with Robin Uthappa. Robin scored 40 runs. The match was pocketed due to the late surge by batsmen like Yusuf Pathan and Ryan ten Doeschate. They scored 39 and 25 runs respectively. Pathan remained not out to see his team through.

In yesterday’s match – played on May 24, these two teams met once again. And it was once again the KKR that came on top. It was once again the Yusuf Pathan show as he scored 72 runs off just 22 balls to make sure Kolkata go to the second spot in the points table.

This ensures that the first two teams get to play one more match before being eliminated in the playoffs.
