Bangalore Airport - Pride Of Karnataka

The fourth busiest airport in India, the Bangalore International Airport is the pride of Bangalore (also called Bengaluru) city. It is located about 40 km away from the city center. This airport took over duties from the HAL Airport, which served the passengers well for many years.

Bangalore Airport is spread over a total area of 4000 acres and provides transportation to more that 11 million passengers every year. 21 international and 10 domestic airlines take off and land here on a regular basis. It connects around 50 destinations in India as well as other parts of the world. Popular domestic airlines like Kingfisher, SpiceJet, IndiGo, Jetlite and GoAir are major contributors to the air traffic in airport in Bangalore. The airport is well equipped to handle 27 aircraft movements every hour and when needed, it can handle up to 720 flights per day.

The construction of this gigantic airport started in 2005. As it was a long pending project, it was improvised upon to facilitate for as many as 12 million passengers yearly. Everything including the terminal, parking, and other infrastructure was given, a new look. Work went on speedily and was inaugurated on May 23, 2008. The first domestic flight from Bangalore Airport was to Mumbai and the first international one was to Singapore.

Salient Features of the Airport in Bangalore

The Runway- This was built to facilitate for all kinds of aircrafts to land and take off safely. The biggest craft can land here without any hassle. A second run is proposed to be built in the coming years as the traffic is increasing day by day.

The Passenger Terminal- this is a 4 storied, completely air-conditioned building where all the operations are undertaken. The total area of 71,000 square meters includes storage, rest rooms, arrivals and departures, retail outlets, baggage and check-in. there are 20 gates to this airport and 8 aero bridges. The aircraft stands with fuelling pits are the first of their kind in India.

The Hajj Terminal- There is a terminal in Bangalore Airport dedicated to Hajj passengers. Separate prayer rooms for women, men and hot water facilities are available here.

Shopping- The airport provides a duty free shopping experience at its various retail outlets. You will get to taste different cuisines in this airport catered by HMSHost and Autogrill. Passengers as well as visitors can enjoy some of their lip smacking dishes.

Lounges- Domestic airlines like Kingfisher, Jet airways and Air India have their separate departure lounges. For international passengers there are Oberoi, the Leela and the Kingfisher lounges.

Medical Facility- The famous hub of hospitals, Columbia Asia offers a round the clock medical help at this airport. It has all the latest equipments and technology to cope with any kind of accidents or casualties even at a large scale.

The Cargo Village- Inaugurated in 2009, it is capable of parking about 80 trucks. There are two terminals with the capacity of 1.5 million metric tons and 2 million metric tons of cargo.

It was proposed in 2009 by the state government to rename the airport after the city’s founder as Kempe Gowda International Airport.
