"The Rice Bowl of India", Andhra Pradesh - A.P for short - became one of the 28 states of Indian republic on 1st November 1956. Hyderabad is its capital city and since past decade or so it has emerged as one of the major IT hub of India. Vishakhapatnam is another major city - an important port, and a strategically important naval base - located on the eastern coast of the state

 

Geography & Climate

 

Andhra Pradesh sits on the eastern part of the Deccan plateau and geographically it is divided into three regions -Telangana, Rayalseema and the Coastal Andhra. Telangana is the largest region of these three measuring above 110,000 square kilometers. Krishna, Godavari, and Tungabhadra are the major rivers that flow eastward irrigating the state before emptying themselves in to the Bay of Bengal.

 

Andhra Pradesh experiences intense summers from March to June, long and heavy monsoon season that starts from July and runs all the way to November, and a very short winter from December to February. The temperatures stay in the rage of 25 degrees during winter time to 45 degrees in the summer season. 

 

Population & Religious demography

 

According to the 2011 census, the state’s population was around 84.5 million. Telugu is the state language spoken by more than 85% of its population, followed by Urdu - 9%, and Banjara - 8.5%. Other languages spoken are in minority include, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi, and Oriya. Over 90% of the population that practices Hinduism is divided in four main casts, namely – Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and the Shudras. And around 9 % population following Islam is influenced by Sufism. The famous Tirupati temple is located in the Tirumala hills of the Chottoor district is around 600 km from Hyderabad.

 

Economy

 

In 2011 Andhra Pradesh was ranked at number two in terms of GDP. Agriculture forms the major portion of the Andhra Pradesh’s economy as the four major rivers irrigate the state – Krishna Godavari, Penna and the Tungabhadra.  Andhra Pradesh is also rich in minerals, especially Uranium and natural gas. The service sector of the state is another contributing element to the states’ economy.

 

Administration

 

The lower house or the legislative assembly with 294 seats is called a Vidhan Sabha, and the upper house or the legislative council with 90 seats is called a Vidhan Parishad. Of these 90 members, local bodies elect 31, the assembly elects the similar number of members, 8 members each come from teachers and graduates, and the Governor of the state nominates the rest 12 members. Andhra Pradesh has 18 representatives in the upper house – Rajya Sabha – of  the Indian Parliament and 42 in the lower house – Lok Sabha.
