Almora

Almora a big horseshoe shaped historical city is situated in Uttarakhand state of India in Himalayan range. Different old and new temples and buildings are the main tourists’ attraction of this hilly town, which is blessed with wonderful natural and scenic beauty. The area, which was ruled over by Chandravanshi kings from eighth to 16th centaury, later went to Gorakhas for short period of twenty-five years before going to British finally in the year 1815. However, the visitors can still witness the Chandra-period scriptural beauty in forts and temples present there.

Local varieties

Almorah is famous for the buildings and shops with wooden doors and windows having round shaped woodwork that perhaps was the specialty of Chandra period wood workers adapted by local carpenters. The other specialties of the local artists can be scene in copper craft and woolens clothes. Locals use special jumpers woven of very soft wool produced here.

Local Music and dances

The entire Himalaya is famous for the folk dances and music but Almorah, which is located in Kumauni part of Uttarakhand, the land of Famous poet Shri Sumitra Nandan Pant, always remains lively with Kumauni folk dances and songs. Group dances by the villagers on festive times can take tourists to the journey of a dreamland.

Places of tourists’ interest

Deer park- The N.D.T. Deer park situated about three km away from main town is one of the most popular tourist spots for picnic and walking purpose. Tourist flock the park especially during evening time watching deer and enjoying the scenic beauty.

Kalimath- Kalimath is another picnic spot about five km on the outskirts of Almorah where tourists gather to enjoy the snow clad peaks and beauty of Almorah that is visible from here.

Binsar- Binsar was the capital of Chandravanshi kings, which is situated about thirty-two kilometers off Almorah. Binsar at a height of about 8000 ft from sea level is perhaps one of the most favorite spot for nature lovers who wish to spend their time without any outer disturbance. Tourists visit Binsar for their interest in animals and birds as the place has a wild life sanctuary.

Kayarmal temple- The Kayarmal temple is the second oldest Sun temple in the country after Konark temple. This temple is very famous for its scriptural values, folded pillars and design of doors and windows.

Nanda Devi temple- This temple is located in city itself and a journey to Almorah is not complete until the tourists have not visited the place. The world famous Raj Jat festival brings thousands Nanda Devi devotees from all over the world in the temple that is celebrated once after every twelve years.
