About Vizhinjam

 

Vizhinjam is known as fishing village just 3 km from Kovalam beach and 17 km from the capital city Thiruvananthapuram. Vizhinjam history starts from the Ay dynasty which is believed to have existed in ninth century. Some of the attractions in Vizhinjam are Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave, Vizhinjam fishing harbor and Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium. Vizhinjam International Seaport is an international deep water multipurpose shipping hub in its initial stage. The Port is proposed at Vizhihjam, 17 km away from the capital city of Kerala.  Vizhinjam port is blessed with a natural sea water depth up to 24 meter. Due to this natural depth Vizhinjam can attract large container vessels in future.

 Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave Temple:

In Vihinjam there is a cave temple contain rock cut sculpture of 18 century. Outer wall of temple depict an unfinished carvings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. The cave enclosed a shrine dedicated to Vinandhara Dakshinamurthi. Many devotees and tourists visit here. As against other temples it was closed on every Monday. Most of the devotees in this temple are fisherman.

Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour:

It is the busiest harbor in Thriuvananthapuram. Here lots of huge fish are sometimes available. Sight of hundreds of small and large fishing boats crowding on the harbor is delighting. A lot of fisherman entering into the sea by pushing their boats for fishing is very attractive. It is a dirty place with fishing smell everywhere. We can buy fresh fish from here. Comparing to the fish market, we can buy fishes at very low price directly from fisherman.

Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium:

It was established in 1997 near theatre junction at Vizhinjam. Though the building is not very attractive it occupies world’s rarest collection like crabs, squirrelfish, clown fish, moon wrasse, butterfly fish, lion fish, giant turtles, small sharks etc. For seeing adults would take a ten rupees ticket and for children pay half amount. Aquarium opens every day at 9 am. and closes at 6 pm. Children’s like this aquarium very much as they seeing giant turtles in open tank easy to touch. The images of Christ, Virgin Mary, idols of Hindu gods and Goddesses are displayed in the aquarium.
