The twelfth largest state in geographical size and 3rd largest in terms of population, Bihar can also be terms as the youngest as more than 58% of the population is below the age of 25 years.  In ancient India, Bihar or Magadha, Mithila, Anga, or Videha – was the major center of culture, power and learning.

 

Geography & Climate

Bihar primarily a fertile stretch of plain at the foothills of the Himalayas, is irrigated by the holiest of the rivers – Ganga, and Gandak and Koshi her tributaries. The river Ganga cuts through the state dividing it in unequal but fertile halves.

The climate of Bihar is very pleasant in the months from September to March, excluding the winter months of December and January when the mercury hover around 0 – 10 degrees centigrade. Summer months of April through June are the hottest with temperatures nearing 40 degrees. Monsoon months – July to September – see good rainfall averaging around 1200+mm a year.  

 

Population & Religious demography

Bihar’s 85% population resides in rural areas with the population density is around 880 persons per sq.km. It also has a healthy sex ration of 919 females for 1000 males – better than those of many developed states of the country.  Bihar’s state animal is the Gaur; the Indian Roller is the state bird while Kanchnar and Peepal are the state flower and state tree respectively.

More than 80% of the population of Bihar practice Hinduism followed by 16% following Islam. In rural areas religion is the main component of the Bihar’s culture and typically you will see lots of shrines located at roadsides and at the foot of the trees.

 

Economy

Although the economy is service oriented, Bihar has a large agriculture base and a small part of industries. Agriculture contributes to the 35% of the economy, while industrial sector puts in around 9%. But the major contributor is the service sector amounting to more than 55% of the economy. Bihar produces significant amounts of fruits like Mango, Guava, Litchi, etc. Bihar has also emerged as the brewery hub of the nation with three major brewers setting up their units in Bihar.

 

Administration

Bihar’s administrative map is divided in 9 Divisions 38 districts. The Governor is the constitutional head of the state, and the Chief Minister holds the real executive powers along with his cabinet. The Chief Secretary is the bureaucratic head while the Chief justice heads the Judiciary.
