The departed begins with a voiceover narration by Jack Nicholson which properly captures the essence of the movie. One of the best movies ever made in the history of cinema and the winner of multiple academy awards the departed is one of those rare movies which doesn’t let you forget about it days after you have seen it.
Jack Nicholson stars as the Irish mafia boss who is not an easy character to portray but it is superbly acted by one of the Hollywood greats who really gets into the character. He is a merciless, conniving psychopath who doesn’t care about anyone but himself. The direction by martin Scorsese is brilliant which focuses on a wide canvas of cops and gangsters and never lets you think that this is a movie. The plot is nothing short of clever. Matt Damon stars as jack Nicholson’s character’s protégé who decides to be a spy for the mafia and work under the police department. Leonardo Dicaprio plays the role of a spy working for the cops but pretends to work for the mafia. This role reversal works very well for the movie as it builds some really suspenseful, edge of your seat moments. You never know what is going to happen to a particular character at a particular point of time.
The plot keeps you on the tenterhooks and the music behind the movie is absolutely perfect. Though it is short on car chases and explosions like other movies of this genre, this is a thoughtful character study which poses many ethical questions to the viewers. Although it is a remake of the Korean movie Infernal Affairs the director infuses enough originality in it to stand apart on its own. All the actors act brilliantly especially Mark Wahlberg who plays the role of a foul mouthed cop perfectly. The story, the music, the camerawork, the acting and almost everything else about this movie is so perfect. Even though it is two and a half hours long it doesn’t bore you and it keeps you hooked. In my opinion this is one of the best movies ever.
