Nagesh Kukunoor Biography

Nagesh Kukunoor is a film maker of Bollywood who is most known for off-beat movies like Iqbal, Dor and Hyderabad Blues. He is famous for parallel movies in Bollywood, yet has placed him among the list of most talented film directors of present times. His other critically well acclaimed movies include 3 Deewarein, Aashayein, Sequal of Hyderabad blues, Mod, Rockford, Bollywood calling and Bombay to Bangkok. His directorial venture with Akshay Kumar 8X10 Tasweer was a commercial and critical failure, though it was an experimental movie with a fresh idea.

 

Nagesh Kukunoor was born in Hyderabad and as a child himself, he was interested in watching Bollywood, Hollywood as well as Telugu movies. After completing Chemical Engineering at Osmania University in Hyderabad, he moved to Georgia in 1988. He completed his Masters’ degree in Chemical Engineering there. As he was interested in movies, he did acting and direction course at the Warehouse Actor's Theater in Atlanta before he returned back to India.

 

As a producer and director, Hyderabad Blues was his first movie. The movie was released in the year 1998 with Nagesh Kukunoor as the leading hero. Malayalam television anchor Rajashri Nair played the leading lady role opposite him. The movie was a romantic comedy and it shows conflicts in cultures of east and west when it comes to an arranged marriage. This movie was shown in many international film festivals and was successful in Indian theatres too. This movie won a couple of Audience Award for best film in many international film festivals too. In 2003, he directed Juhi Chawla and Nasarudden Shah in parallel cinema, 3 Deewarein. This movie was commercially a big failure at box office. It won Filmfare best story award.

 

In 2005, two critically well acclaimed movies of Nagesh Kukunoor were released – Dor and Iqbal. Iqbal was a roaring hit at box office, though its total budget was below one crore rupees. Shreyas Talpade did remarkable performance in both these movies. Iqbal was selected as Best film on other social issues at National awards. Similar to Iqbal, Aasayein was an inspirational story where the lead role was played by John Abraham. Ayesha Takia has worked in a series of Nagesh Kukunoor movies like Dor, Mod and 8X10 Tasweer.
