Margi Madhu Biography

Margi Madhu is an artist associated with Koodiyattam. He is one of the leading artists of present-day generation who performs and promotes this traditional temple art form, a derivative of Sanskrit drama based on Hindu epics and mythology. He is the son of legendary Koodiyattam artist and guru Moozhikkulam Kochukuttan Chakyar and also the nephew of Padmabhushan Ammannur Madhava Chakyar. Learnt the art from both these legends, he is carrying forward the legacy of their forefathers who has been associated with this tradition for many generations. Keeping intact the soul of Koodiyattom, he trains students through an art centre he started in Moozhikulam in 2003.

Margi Madhu hails from Thrissur, Kerala. Born into a family of artists, traditionally linked with Koodiyattam, Madhu too followed the same tradition. He grew up watching the performances of his father and his uncle. Moozhikkulam Kochukuttan Chakyar and Padmabhushan Ammannur Madhava Chakyar started a new branch of Koodiyattam and named it as Ammannur tradition of Koodiyattam. They together performed on stage with their creative heights and minimum remuneration. But as artists satisfaction was more important for such iconic artists. As a child his training started at the age of 11, and he received formal training from his father and uncle.

At a point of time during his academic years, he was lusted by outside colourful world with high-salaried job. He was in a dilemma too, to choose the right one. He was guided by Late D Appukuttan Nair, the founder of Margi, who made him stand strong in Koodiyattam, and now he is one of the leading artists of this art form. As an artist, Ravana, Arjuna, Sugreeva and Vidushaka are his favourite roles.
