Lakhumal Hiranand Hiranandani Biography

Lakhumal Hiranand Hiranandani was a famous ENT surgeon who has given some outstanding contributions to Indian medical science. A pioneer of ENT surgeries, he was also a social activist and philanthropist. He was honoured by Padma Bhushan by government of India for his contributions to the field of medical science. His surgeries were known to be Dr. Hiranandani's Operations. He was the founder chairman of Hiranandani Foundation Trust which runs two schools in India. He is the fifth and only the first Indian to receive Golden Award of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. Two of his sons - Surendra Hiranandani and Niranjan Hiranandani established Hiranandani Group, one of the leading groups in real estate business and have built many townships in Mumbai and major cities of south India.  

 

He was born on September 1917 in Thatta of Sindh province in British India into a middle class family. His real name is Lakhumal Hiranand Khiara. His family migrated to Mumbai in 1937. He graduated in medicine in 1942. Later he secured the degree of FRCS from London and returned back to India to start his professional career. He worked at Topiwala National Medical College and Bai Yamunabai Laxman Nair Charitable Hospital till his retirement. Later he worked as a professor of ENT at Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation. He served as an Emeritus Professor at Topiwala National Medical College till the age of 83.

 

Among his three sons, Navin Hiranandani stepped into his father’s shoes and took ENT stream, which Surendra Hiranandani and Niranjan Hiranandani ventured into real estate in the 1980s. Hiranandani was married to Kanta. Lakhumal is known for his outstanding contributions in the field of ENT surgeries and introduced many new surgical methods in otorhinolaryngology. He passed away in 2013 aged 96. He was survived by his wife.
