Easter Dishes Of Travancore To Celebrate The Eve

Indryappam and duck roast are inevitable dishes for Easter celebrations. Let me give their quick recipes along with Achayan’s chicken curry prepared in Syrian Catholic style.

 

Pesaha Appam (Indriyappam)

 

  1. Rice flour of steam cake – 1 cup
  2. Payasam rice powdered – 1 cup
  3. Tender coconut scrapped – 1 cup
  4. Garlic – 5 cloves
  5. Shallots – 6
  6. Cumin seeds – a pinch
  7. Water – half cup

 

Method of preparation:

 

  • Mix both rice flours well. Crush coconut, garlic, shallots and cumin seeds and add to flour along with sufficient water. Mix it to make a fine paste.
  • Pour it to a mould of any desired shape and steam-cook it in a steamer for 20-25 minutes.
  • When cooled, cut it into pieces. Serve it with fresh coconut milk.

 

Syrian duck roast

 

  1. Duck cut into pieces and cooked – 500 gm
  2. Onion sliced – 4
  3. Green chillies split into two – 5
  4. Ginger cut into long pieces – 2 pieces
  5. Garlic chopped – 3 cloves
  6. Coconut oil – 200 milli
  7. Curry leaves – 1 stalk
  8. Chilli powder – 1 tsp
  9. Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  10. Coriander powder – 2 tsp
  11. Pepper powder – 2 tsp
  12. Salt – as needed
  13. Tomato sliced – 4

 

Method of preparation:

 

  • Saute well onions, ginger, garlic and green chillies in hot oil.
  • Add all powdered spices except pepper to it and mix well. After that, add sliced tomatoes.
  • When tomato is sauted well, add pepper powder, cooked duck and curry leaves to it. Add enough salt too.

 

Achayan’s chicken curry

 

  1. Chicken pieces – 1 kg
  2. Ginger-garlic chopped – 2 tsp
  3. Onions chopped – 2
  4. Tomato paste – made from 2 tomatoes
  5. Curry leaves – 2 stem
  6. Coconut oil – 2 tsp
  7. Chilli powder – 1.5 tsp
  8. Coriander powder – 2 tsp
  9. Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  10. Chicken masala – 1 tsp
  11. Potato cooked and crushed – 1
  12. Garam masala – a pinch
  13. Salt – as required

 

Method of preparation:

 

  • Take an urli and add coconut oil. When oil heats well, add ginger, garlic and curry leaves. Sauté well the ingredients.
  • Then add powdered spices to it and sauet again.
  • Then add chicken pieces along with tomato paste and mix well the ingredients.
  • Add sufficient water and salt and close the lid. Cook in low flame.
  • When chicken is cooked well, add crushed potato and serve hot.
